RUSSIAN SHIP MAIL IN THE SEA OF JAPAN : SCARCE TRANSIT via KOBE TO SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Vladivostok 1906 (28 September) – Illustrated postcard from Vladivostok Bay to Sydney, Australia, posted onboard of the steamship « MAORI KING », Russian 4k Arms left uncancelled but tied 5 days later upon transit in NAGASAKI (3 October 1906). Excellent strike of the boxed PAQUEBOT handstamp (Hosking type 3243). From there transferred by the Japanese post to KOBE (8 October 1906) in Osaka Bay, where it was put on a Pacific liner to its final destination Sydney. Very Fine.
Spectacular route, with a very scarce transit via Kobe. Specialist item.
Provenance : collection Weinert
Note : The S.S Maori King was a British-registered steamer involved in the « Maori King » affair when, in Summer 1907, about 1,300 Chinese workers heading for California rioted onboard due to hardship. After this episode of diplomatic importance, the Maori King wrecked off Ningbu, Chinese coast two years later.
